Two points in Architecture.

Two points in Architecture.

In all matters in architecture, there are these two points:—the thing signified, and that which gives it its significance. That which is signified is the subject of which we may be speaking; and that which gives significance is a demonstration on scientific principles. It appears, then, that one who professes himself an architect should be well versed in both directions. He ought, therefore, to be both naturally gifted and amenable to instruction. Neither natural ability without instruction nor instruction without natural ability can make the perfect artist. Let him be educated, skilful with the pencil, instructed in geometry, know much history, have followed the philosophers with attention, understand music, have some knowledge of medicine, know the opinions of the jurists, and be acquainted with astronomy and the theory of the heavens

These are usually considered in the context of strip foundations and are used mainly on sloping sites to reduce the amount of excavation and materials required to produce an adequate foundation.

A foundation constructed in a series of steps that approximate the slope of the bearing stratum. The purpose is to avoid horizontal force vectors that might cause sliding.

Definitions in Architecture & Construction

A building is an assemblage that is firmly attached to the ground and that provides total or nearly total shelter for machines, processing equipment, performance of human activities, storage of human possessions, or any combination of these.

Building design is the process of providing all information necessary for construction of a building that will meet its owner’s requirements and also satisfy public health, welfare, and safety requirements. Architecture is the art and science of building design. Building design may be legally executed only by persons deemed competent to do so in which the building is to be constructed. Competency is determined on the basis of education, experience, and ability to pass a written test of design skills.

Architects are persons legally permitted to practice architecture.

Engineers are experts in specific scientific disciplines and are legally permitted to design parts of buildings; in some cases, complete buildings.

Building construction is generally performed by laborers and craftspeople engaged for the purpose by an individual or organization, called a contractor. The contractor signs an agreement, or contract, with the building owner under which the contractor agrees to construct a specific building on a specified site and the owner agrees to pay for the materials and services provided.

Structure, Facade and Beauty

Structure, Facade and Beauty

The exterior character of a building is often determined by how structure relates to the building envelope.

Architects frequently explore and exploit spatial relationships between these two elements in order to express their architectural ideas and generally enrich their designs.

Structure plays numerous roles in contributing to the visual appearance of a building facade, through modulation, adding depth and texture, and acting as a visual screen or filter. In all of them the structural scale must relate appropriately to the scales of non-structure elements in order to achieve the desired outcome.

Open Plan House Designs

Open Plan House Designs

Open design is the architectural design idea which entertains the flow of space from one to another. Open design in a building can be achieved if one can see from one space to another. The physical & visual obstacles are removed between the spaces.

Open design can be employed in any apace in a building, but most people do it in offices, restaurants, and any other public space. For the case of residential, open design can be applied in lounge, kitchen and dining spaces, bedrooms etc.

The main idea of open design is to move beholder’s eyes from one space to another or from one room to another. This happens when there are no constraints between the spaces. Lounge, kitchen and dining can be put in one place without any partition between. That flow of space from lounge to dining to kitchen is what called open design.

Open design also can be achieved where there is a connection between interior and exterior. There should be no visual obstacles from inside-out, so that beholder can bring the entire exterior to the interior. This can be achieved by putting a glass wall between the interior and exterior. Putting a ceiling to floor glass in a bedroom which opens to the balcony or courtyard is the good approach.

Open design is employed to the spaces which have a reasonable relation example, dining and kitchen. For the case of interior and exterior connection, the exterior must looks attractive also bring the sense of privacy to the interior. The advantage of open design is that the space looks spacious, enjoyable and airy.

Housing is more than houses.

11:54 PM 0
Housing is more than houses.

Adequate shelter means more than a roof over one’s head. It also means adequate privacy; adequate space; physical accessibility; adequate security; security of tenure; structural stability and durability; adequate lighting; heating and ventilation; adequate basic infrastructure, such as water supply, sanitation and waste-management facilities; suitable environmental quality and health related factors; and adequate and accessible location with regard to work and basic facilities; all of which should be available at an affordable cost.

A house therefore is to be seen not only in terms of what it physically is but also in terms of what it does socially, economically and environmentally for the people who have to live in it.

Architecture Ordering Principles
Burj Khalifa

The principles of design of the building are based on the specific purpose and the varied needs of the building. The following ordering principles are visual methods that allow the form and space of the building to co-exist in order to make a design complete.

AXIS. a line drawn between two points in space and about which forms and spaces can be arranged in irregular or regular manner.

SYMMETRY. the balanced distribution of equivalent forms and spaces about a common line or point.

HIERARCHY. the importance or significance of the space based on its size, shape or position relative to other spaces of the organization.

RHYTHM. the use of recurring patterns to organize a series of like forms or spaces.

DATUM. a line, plane or volume that by its continuity and regularity helps to organize a pattern of forms and spaces.

TRANSFORMATION. a principle through which an architectural concept or organization can be retained, strengthened, and built upon through a number of manipulations.
