Open design is the architectural design idea which entertains the flow of space from one to another. Open design in a building can be achieved if one can see from one space to another. The physical & visual obstacles are removed between the spaces.
Open design can be employed in any apace in a building, but most people do it in offices, restaurants, and any other public space. For the case of residential, open design can be applied in lounge, kitchen and dining spaces, bedrooms etc.
The main idea of open design is to move beholder’s eyes from one space to another or from one room to another. This happens when there are no constraints between the spaces. Lounge, kitchen and dining can be put in one place without any partition between. That flow of space from lounge to dining to kitchen is what called open design.
Open design also can be achieved where there is a connection between interior and exterior. There should be no visual obstacles from inside-out, so that beholder can bring the entire exterior to the interior. This can be achieved by putting a glass wall between the interior and exterior. Putting a ceiling to floor glass in a bedroom which opens to the balcony or courtyard is the good approach.
Open design is employed to the spaces which have a reasonable relation example, dining and kitchen. For the case of interior and exterior connection, the exterior must looks attractive also bring the sense of privacy to the interior. The advantage of open design is that the space looks spacious, enjoyable and airy.
